Helen Newman is a researcher for the Knowledge Modelling Group at Keele University, studying for her PhD in Computer Science under the supervision of Dr Gordon Rugg at Keele University, England and is a Lecturer at the Sixth Form College in Stoke-on-Trent, England.  She is a Master of Science in Computing (Keele University), holds a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and has a Bachelor of Arts, with honours, in English Medieval Studies from Exeter University, England.

Previously Helen was a free-lance IT Training Consultant concentrating on project managing the training, development and delivery of business and system change during major system implementations (bespoke or proprietary).  Her clients included: HM Revenue and Customs, AIG Europe, London Electricity, Midlands Electricity (now Npower) and East Midlands Electricity. She was also a Project Manager at Great Universal PLC where, as part of the Business Change Team, she was tasked with bringing in new working practices, performance management and management structures.

During her career as a Training Consultant Helen developed an interest in the ways in which people learn, leading her to study for her PGCE and teach Computing and English in schools. Combining the skills of teaching youngsters with those of training adults is of special interest to her and has steered her research into the categorisation and the grapical representations of information. She is currently investigating how to show complex argumentation information in easily accessible representations.
